"New Toy"

7"
a: "New Toy"
b: "Cat's Away" (single mix)

"Car's Away" (single mix) different to later released "New Toy" EP mix; see albums discography.

Wrong speed for "Cat's Away" on German 7" release, due to pressing error. The record itself plays at 45 rpm, but the speed of the b-side track is like playing a 33 rpm record on 45 rpm.

a: "New Toy" (Extended Version)

"Details" (first version) previously released on "Riding High" soundtrack album (see non-album tracks page).

"Lucky Number" (extended version) (as released in 1979) called "Disco Version" on this release.

Listed separately because this is the only release of "Details" (first version) in decent audio quality. It has been originally released on the soundtrack album for "Riding High" (see non-album tracks page), of which the audio quality is of low standard.
See also upcoming screen/soundtracks/acting overview for "Details" (first version - instrumental), and upcoming detailed overview of all songs.

It is common misbelief that this EP (released in spring 1981) and two other 12" EPs also called "New Toy" (see below) are variations of the actual "New Toy" EP (see albums discography), to which they are in fact NOT related.
Those three EPs were released by local record labels without input from Lene or Stiff Records, while the actual "New Toy" EP (Epic Records, US, July 1981; also released in Canada and Australia) was an official new release of Lene's that came out for completely different reasons than these three others, and separate from the "New Toy" single release (see "'No Man's Land Mysteries and Rumours" page).

-The Japanese six-track 12" EP "New Toy" (see above) is not a variation of the actual "New Toy" EP, but a different format of the "New Toy" single release. It was released by the local record label just instead of putting out "New Toy" in usual 7" / 12" single format in Japan.
At the time of its release (spring 1981), there had been no plans yet for the actual "New Toy" EP on Epic Records in America (July 1981).

-The Australian limited six-track 12" EP "New Toy" (see below) is not a variation of the actual "New Toy" EP, but a different format of the "New Toy" single release. It was the way how the local record label released the 12" single in Australia.
At the time of its release (spring 1981), there had been no plans yet for the actual "New Toy" EP on Epic Records in America (July 1981; also released in Australia later in the same year).

-The French five-track 12" EP "New Toy" (see "Other releases" section) was released by the local record label in France in late 1982 or 1983, and is also unrelated to the actual "New Toy" EP.

Also, these three releases are unrelated to one another.

Illinois Entertainer (30 Dec 2005)

Hi, My Name Is Lene

IE: Your new album, Shadows And Dust, is infused with supernatural themes.

LL: We deal with the real world everyday. It gets a little tedious [laughs]. I've always been interested in unnatural and spooky things. I'm not really so much into horror for the sake of people dying and blood and gore and that sort of thing. I've always loved stories and myths and legends and anything that has a science fiction or fantasy element to it.

IE: What is the secret to the longstanding creative collaboration between you and your husband, Les Chappell?

LL: I suppose that to a great degree we like similar things and we have similar standards. We won't stop until we get it right. If one of us is losing a little bit of energy, then we have the other to say [laughs], "This isn't really right. We have to go to the next stage."

IE: One question on everyone's mind is about the more than 15-year gap between the release of March and Shadows And Dust. Did motherhood play a part in your absence?

LL: Of course, I don't know how people can do such an important job and also do other jobs. I can't see how it can be done. It also came at a time when the music business was not so much fun for me. So, it was not a difficult decision for me.

IE: As an artist and performer, to what would you attribute your longevity?

LL: I think you have to continuously excite yourself [laughs], if that doesn't sound too rude. You have to want to do it for some other reason apart from making a living. That's not been the main thing [for me]. The main thing is to create something that's never been before. To make something exciting happen.

Record (US; May 1983)

It's one thing for an artist to finance a record, but when an artist lays out thousands of dollars for a world tour of sorts, that, as the expression has it, is a whole 'nother smoke.

Yet Lene Lovich is opening up her own purse to pay for a four-month jaunt through North America, Australia, Japan, Thailand and India. [Note: Concerts in Thailand, India (Bombay), Hong Kong were scheduled, but eventually did not take place. There had also been plans for 1983 concerts in Yugoslavia, Rome, UK, but these did not happen either.]

"I've always been attracted to self-made people," Lovich says by way of explaining her strategy. "I'm self-made myself. You know my record label (Stiff) has no more offices here, so I'm totally independent, and it's up to me to take care of things. Right now, I'm here because I want to play in America, I want to thrill myself with music. There's no other reason to be in this business, is there?"

Lovich, who hasn't appeared in the States in some eighteen months, is, by economic necessity, keeping her shows simple.

"We don't do videos, slides, special effects," she explains, "it's a very direct, personal show. I want the audience to know me, and I want to see their faces."

Her current band - guitarist Les Chappell (her writing partner), bassist Ron Francois, drummer Steve Goulding (from The Rumour) and keyboardists Ben Barson and Lindon Connah - is strongly rhythm-oriented, while Lovich's vocals continue, in the artist's words, to "pick up certain frequencies and bear down on them."

She seems reasonably happy with the response to her recent LP, No Man's Land, and expects the tour to revive interest in the record, but the best she is hoping for "is not to lose money".

"What's important," Lovich says, "is that I plan to stay around, and at this point I've never felt more ambitious about the future, never felt more on top of things. I remember as a child growing up in a non-artistic family and being told I couldn't sing. But I kept at it. It's important for all of us to make something happen, to make our mark on the world."
